Broken garage door spring repair
If the bang was loud enough that you checked whether a car hit the house, it was the torsion spring. It is the most common failure we see in Coral Springs and the one repair nobody should attempt at home.

The spring does the lifting, not the opener
The torsion spring sits on a shaft above the opening and carries essentially the whole weight of the door. That is why a balanced door lifts with about ten pounds of effort even though it weighs two to four hundred. When the spring breaks, that weight transfers instantly to the opener, the cables and the track — none of which were built to carry it.
So the door suddenly feels impossibly heavy and the opener strains, hums, or does nothing. The opener is not broken. It is being asked to do the spring's job.
Why Coral Springs doors reach this point together
Coral Springs was built out in waves through the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Whole streets went up in the same eighteen months with the same doors and the same springs, and springs are rated in cycles rather than years — so identical doors under similar use arrive at the end of that rating within a season or two of each other.
That is why we regularly do three springs on one street in a month. If a neighbour just had theirs done and your house came out of the same phase, yours is on the same clock.
The one repair not to DIY
A torsion spring holds several hundred pounds of stored energy and releases all of it the instant a winding bar slips. It injures homeowners every year, almost always people with the right tools and the wrong experience. There is no safe way to improvise it.
Questions about broken spring repair
One spring or both?
Both, when the door has two. They are the same age and share the load, so the survivor is already near the end of its own life. The pair costs less than two separate visits months apart.
Can I use the door until you arrive?
No. Do not run the opener and do not lift it by hand. With the spring gone the door is unbalanced and can come down fast.
How long should a new spring last here?
A standard spring is rated around 10,000 cycles — roughly seven years at four openings a day. A higher-cycle spring is worth it on a door that gets heavy family use, which describes most of Coral Springs.
